For Bowie Newcomers: Our Picks for Exploring Bowie’s History
When your livelihood includes studying a craft that’s almost as old as civilization itself, you start to really appreciate and respect historic buildings and the history behind your own town, as well as those around you. Bowie happens to be a remarkable place for history buffs. A few of our local history picks:
There are few better ways to get a look into Bowie’s history than Belair Mansion, built in 1745 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it operates as a museum and offers a view into the lives of 18th-century Maryland dwellers, with historical documents and trinkets that span back to the home’s beginnings.
Belair Stable Museum
Just a block from the Belair Mansion, the Belair Stable Museum offers insight into Bowie’s equestrian history. Famed thoroughbred horses were stabled there, and you can take a look through the legacy of those horses, while getting a view into agricultural life tracing back to the 1700s.
Bowie Railroad Museum
If you read at all into Bowie’s history, the first thing you’ll find is that the railroad truly put Bowie on the map on the heels of the Civil War. And the city honors that history at the Bowie Railroad Museum. The complex (which was the depot for the Pennsylvania Railroad way back when) was restored in the 1990s, and today, you can check out photos, information and artifacts that illustrate Bowie’s history, along with a 1922 Norfolk and Western Railroad caboose.
Another Bowie Favorite: Take in a Baysox Game
Baseball-loving Bowie residents are lucky to have the Baltimore Orioles’ Double-A affiliate in the Eastern League, the Bowie Baysox, right in their backyard. The team plays their home games at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie. And with tickets at around $15, Baysox games make for a great and affordable family outing.
