We all love our chimneys. They add a certain aesthetic beauty to our homes that nothing else can match. They also help keep our families safe from the smoke and harmful gases that would otherwise leak into our homes without them.
Since we value them so much for the protection they provide, why shouldn’t we protect them a little, too? This is where chimney caps come into the picture. They’re not required on chimneys; however, it is strongly recommend that you consider having one installed.
Going Back to Square 1
Many homeowners aren’t quite sure what purpose a chimney cap serves. It’s quite simple actually. The basic job of a chimney cap is to cover the chimney’s opening to keep rain, pests and debris from getting into your chimney and/or home. Water is directed away from the center and off the sides of your chimney; if left to its own devices, water will penetrate the chimney causing brick and mortar deterioration, crown damage, and potential water damage to other areas of your home.
Birds, other wildlife, leaves, twigs and other debris are blocked from getting to your chimney via the mesh screening on the side, thereby preventing it from becoming a giant trash can. If any of these things were to get into your chimney, they could damage the chimney and cause more problems for you down the road. On the other hand, keeping them all out can increase the lifetime of your chimney liner.
Chimney Cap Materials
Our chimney caps are custom made from high quality stainless steel or copper and can be as simple or ornate as you want. Our outside mount and Big Dripper series of caps offer the most comprehensive protection from Mother Nature’s many elements and wildlife of any caps on the market. If you’re not sold on the stainless or copper look, we also offer powder coated stainless steel options.
The previously mentioned Big Dripper series offers many of the same features as our other caps with one big addition: a large drip edge. What’s the point of a drip edge, you ask? It allows water to drip straight down to your roof rather than allowing it to run down the side of your chimney (where it can soak in and wreak more havoc).
